You Are More Than Just a Body

When someone mentions "selfcare" or "yoga," your honest reaction might be: "I don't have time for that," "My body doesn't bend that way," or "That's not for people like me."


I get it. In my work with stressed-out humans (and being one myself), I've discovered we're complex beings with multiple layers that all need attention—not just bodies to be stretched and strengthened. Traditional wellness focuses on just your physical body. But you're five interconnected layers of being—body, energy, emotions, wisdom, spirit. When you understand all five, you reconnect with your wholeness.

I didn't invent the idea that humans are more than just physical bodies. The Yoga Sutras taught the five koshas (five interconnected layers of being) over 2,000 years ago. Body, energy, emotions, wisdom, spirit. Not separate. Interconnected.


I didn't invent the idea that sustainable wellness requires community. The concept of sangha (people of the path supporting each other's journey) has guided practitioners for millennia.

What I did was translate. Take ancient wisdom and make it accessible for modern life. Take Sanskrit terms and turn them into language that works for doctoral students, congregants, faculty, people in recovery.


And then ground that translation in research. Peer-reviewed studies showing that individual wellness programs fail while community-based approaches succeed. Research confirming that multi-level wellness design fills critical gaps. Evidence demonstrating that what the Yoga Sutras taught centuries ago actually works.

This layer acknowledges that emotions are real, valid, and informative—not problems to fix or spiritual failures to overcome. Like weather, emotions pass through. Some days bring sunshine, some bring storms. You're not the weather; you're the vast sky holding it all.

It's about cultivating the kind of knowing that comes not from external authorities telling you what to do, but from your own capacity to see clearly.
